So our staff had their minds blown today.. We learned that the first ever NFL football game was played only an hour North of our beloved city of Cincinnati. Absolutely surprised... had no idea. The NFL has decided that they want to pay homage to cities such as these. Cities where it all began.
The NFL Foundation shouted out that it will build a brand new state of the art turf field in Dayton to recognize the city’s contribution to football. As we said above, the first ever NFL game was played at Triangle Park on Oct. 3, 1920, between the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles. Dayton beat the shit out of Columbus 14-0 (We assume that was a blowout in the 20's.... who the hell knows.) The most bad ass part is imagining all of these dudes slamming beer and ripping cigarettes between each series...A time when men were men. No helmet half drunk football. you've got to love the sound of that considering today's league...
The National Football League is celebrating the nearly 100-year history of the sport by hosting telecasts in Dayton and the other original towns during the NFL draft. This will be pretty cool. Taking football back to its roots in a time where honestly the NFL has been under the microscope for goofy calls and owners getting handies in rub down parlors.
“This is a really special moment for our city,” said Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley in a statement. “We’re excited that the NFL is recognizing the places that were there in the very beginning and that they are celebrating Dayton’s special history in paving the way for the league with a donation that will leave a lasting impact in the community.”
The Cincinnati Bengals have announced they will help kick off the football league’s 100th season with a practice at Triangle Park. The field of the first NFL game still exists. But the turf field is expected to be completed in time for the Bengals’ practice, likely in late July or early August. You can bet your sweet ass we will be there to cover it..
