WhoDey fans were openly and actively pissed when we announced our selection of tight end Drew Sample in the second round of the NFL Draft. "Why?" they asked. "Haskins was still on the board!" many screamed. While we admit the 4TH&CINCY crew was among the confused we trust the process. Look, you can try your hardest to predict what a team is going to do during the seven rounds of chaos known as the NFL Draft but ultimately, you never know.
Bengals fans thought defense or offensive line all day (meaning tackles, guards, centers). For a relatively unknown tight end to be selected so high by us was a shocker. We have Eifert as a solid vet and Uzomah as a killer partner for him. What the hell were we thinking? RUN GAME... The coaching staff (Coach Taylor) is on record as saying we are going to run the ball. Our backs are talented and they need some blocking to get behind. This was the initial thought anyway.
Drew is a solid blocking tight end and we need linemen to create holes, but upon further inspection he seems to be much more. Drew is a lot more well-rounded than just a run-blocking tight end. Run blocking is the best thing that he does absolutely no argument from us, but he is also a guy that can take the top off the coverage or really stretch the seam and get Andy and the boys a few badass plays a game. He may not be an every down tight end but he may be a sort of Swiss-Army knife seated at the end of our line. You can say he was held back at Washington and could not blossom in college due to shit quarterbacks tossing up the rock for his squad, but we will not know his potential until he hits our field.
Drew may never be a tight end that catches 75 passes a season and drops in 15 touchdowns but I think we have a place for him here in Cincinnati. We will without a doubt use his blocking ability and hopefully line him up on some line backer mismatches for one or two a game. So F the haters, lets go Drew!
