AAF Week One

Week one of the Alliance of American football league has come to its end. The fans of football waited with bated breath for the king of sports to make its "spring debut". It did not disappoint. Below we will list the week one recap for you guys to see.

Halfback David Cobb out of Minnesota handles the rock for the San Antonio Commanders

1. San Antonio Commanders vs San Diego Fleet (6-15)

The two teams met at the Alimodome on Saturday to play the AAF or "Alliance" as they are calling its inaugural game. The game started off slow with each teams field goal kickers being the men of the day. Both quarterbacks started off strong, especially Woodside but they waned toward the second half of the game.

Woodside was able to make pretty awesome connections with former Bearcat Mekale Mckay throughout the majority of the game. They just couldn't get it into the end-zone. The game ended up turning into a 15-6 defensive brawl by the end of it but that would be giving the offensive play credit. In all honestly the offense on both sides struggle to get into a rhythm. It was more like big plays would happen and then short runs or dropped passes would follow. Overall this was entertaining and WAY better football than anyone expected. Stat line listed below.

2. Orlando Apollos vs Atlanta Legends (40-6)

This doozy of a game was a one sided affair. The Orlando Apollos kicked the shit out of the Atlanta Legends. 40-6 is an outrageous ass kicking. Orlando put on a clinic against the clearly outclassed Atlanta team. The Legends lead 3-0 going into the second quarter but that changed very quickly. Orlando went off scoring 22 points in the second quarter and finishing strong with 15 points in the 4th.

It would totally suck to get hyped up over a brand new professional sports team because you're "tired of the NFL" only to watch them get man handled on day one. Hey Atlanta.... stick with the Falcons on this one... Legend seem to be lost in the sauce when it comes to playing football. Stat line listed below.

3. Birmingham Iron (totally badass) vs Memphis Express (26-0)

This one was another one sided affair. We were sort of hyped up and almost claimed the Express as our blog favorite but shied away after watching Hackenberg go 10 for 23 and 87 yards in the 26-0 loss. He also was clearly having an out of body experience not remembering that he was miced up because he dropped every F-Bomb, S-word under the sun while struggling to quarterback. I would like to say that I am surprised he played as bad as he did but I would be lying...

Trent Richardson on the other side of the ball for the Iron had a different day. Trent made history for Birmingham having scored the franchises first ever touchdown. It wasn't real sexy but he powered into the end zone in Alabama style. He only had 58 yards in Trent Richardson style but he punched in two touchdowns and a two point conversion for the Iron.

Overall Birmingham embarrassed the Express with Luis Perez making it rain in the passing department and the D-Line gobbling up any attempt Memphis made to run the ball. It was an entertaining game. Stat line listed below.

4. Arizona Hotshots vs Salt Lake City Stallions

Arizona, who arguably has the coolest uniforms in the AAF, took the win over the Salt Lake City Stallions at 38-22. The Hotshots got on the board first with a quick toss and catch from quarterback John Woflord to Tight End Gerald Christian. With a league where scoring (beside the Apollos) has been at a premium in the debut this game felt like real football.

In quarters 1-4 the Hotshot scoring went 8, 11, 16, 3. The Stallions went 0, 16, 0, 6. I will say this game was good football from start to finish. Eliminating the extra point is a surprisingly exciting feature that this league has installed. Overall this was the most familiar feeling game out of the four season openers. Stat line listed below.

Overall we were thoroughly impressed with week one play. Viewership was better then the nights NBA games and the football that was being played was actually fun to watch. Logan Woodside was asked by a sideline reporter "If the NFL is a 10 in terms of speed, gameplay and roughness where does the AAF sit?" He replied with a 7-8. We will see where the league goes from here and continue to update you guys in our "Around the League" section and update you on who we think our favorite team will be.
