With free agency in full swing the Bengals have made a few moves. These moves are starting clear the smoke and open up what appears to be a path to the drafting of an absolute stud.
With the signing of players like Bobby Hart, John Miller, Cedric O, B.W. Webb, and Tyler Eifert it would seem we are attempting to fill clear needs in our program. We must also keep in mind that we just let go veteran linebacker Vontaze Burfict. While he was not in his best form last year he was still the heartbeat and soul of our defense.
We have picked up O-line, signed our tight ends and augmented our defensive backs so what is left? The linebacker position. These signings are the writing on the wall as we head into the draft with a now glaring need to help round us out. An absolute freak of a guy at linebacker would be superstar Butkis Award winning Devin White. White will provide a fire to our defense that we lose with an in shape Vontaze Burfict.
At 6’1” he is slightly shorter than your average guy at his position coming out of the draft but at 240lbs he ran a 4.4 forty yard dash, incredible. This shows he can cover the field and chase down running backs. He is also one of the most intimidating looking dudes I have ever seen... James Harrison like in size and strength. He would be electric to have on our side of the ball.
Devin had 22 reps on the bench, a vertical of 39.5 (second in the combine for his position) and a solid shuttle. Now we don’t put much stock on combine performance and look to the players on field play, but he showed up And he showed out. The man had 123 total tackles (61 solo) and 3 forced fumbles last season proving he is ready for the league. He can flat out play football. He also has the intangibles of a leader which we need on that side of the ball.
We have shown our cards. We have laid our hand on the table and it reads “we are gonna draft a linebacker”. Shit we just cut our best one even though he fell off the wheels last year. only time will tell as the draft creeps closer and closer but my God this would be a nuclear explosion of a pick for Cincy. Let’s go!
