NFL Free agency is around the corner and the Bengals have made several moves to hold onto some of their own free agents. On Friday, the team announced it had extended tender offers to five of its current roster players whose contracts from the 2018 season are set to expire on Wednesday the 13th when free agency begins. Holy shit I cannot believe it's already here..
Offensive lineman Trey Hopkins, who will be a fourth year player for the Bengals was issued a tender that will make him a restricted free agent when free agency does actually open. The Bengals issued him a second-round tender.
In addition, cornerback Tony McRae, offensive guard Alex Redmond, defensive tackle Josh Tupou and safety Brandon Wilson, who are all third year guys, have been issued tenders which assure the Bengals will retain their exclusive NFL rights for the upcoming 2019 season.
So, a little explanation now... A restricted free agent has the right to negotiate with other teams with their current team having the right to retain that player by matching any offer he receives from another NFL squad. But because Cincy threw out a second-round tender to Hopkins, if he signs an offer from another team and the Bengals choose to not match that offer, the other team must compensate the Bengals with their 2019 second-round draft selection. Crazy move I know..
The no shit deadline for an RFA to sign an offer from another team is the 19th of April. If Hopkins has not signed an offer from another team by that date, his 2019 NFL rights revert exclusively to us.
Hop also has the option to hang with the Bengals next season by signing a one-year tender offer, or by negotiating a longer-term contract. Players with exclusive rights like McRae, Redmond, Tupou and Wilson also each have the option of signing the Bengals’ tender offer or negotiating a longer-term contract with the team. We will see what happens. I would personally like to see them sign a few free agents... LINEMAN...cough...cough... but hell I dont work there. Until then...
